Logo Design
Christopher Ortega & Nia Heaston
In 2023, I was chosen from a pool of over 5,500 HBCU students to represent the Toronto Raptors in the second cohort of the NBA HBCU Fellowship Program—an initiative by the NBA Foundation that provides league-wide career development opportunities in the NBA for students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
What will be your legacy?
During orientation at the NBA Head Office in New Jersey, the NBA Foundation and Fearless Dialogues challenged us to name our class based on what we'd like the legacy of our time in the league to be. Over the summer, I worked with my fellows Chris Ortega (CLE) and Nia Heaston (DET) to define a name for our cohort, ultimately landing on "The Chosen Trendsetters".
As the sole designer in my cohort, I was then tasked by the NBA Foundation and Fearless Dialogues to take our chosen name and create a logo to represent the class.
I started off by casting a wide net and exploring many different directions before narrowing it down to three concepts that I presented to the rest of the Fellowship Class.
The final logo was screenprinted onto commemorative hoodies that we received during the Fellowship Closing Ceremony at Alex Haley Farms in Clinton, Tennessee.
